The doctoral curriculum of neurosciences at the University of Tartu was launched in September 2001. The distinguishing features of the curriculum of neurosciences are its focus on the nervous system, interdisciplinarity, belonging to the Network of European Neuroscience Schools, and the fact that compulsory subjects are conducted in English. The curriculum includes an integrated approach to the nervous system and closely related subjects, in which aspects of molecular, preclinical, clinical and translational medicine are systematically represented.
The structure of all doctoral curricula at the University of Tartu is similar. The duration of doctoral studies is four years, totalling 240 ECTS, of which studies with a doctoral thesis amount to 180 ECTS, 60 ECTS credits are divided between compulsory subjects (36 ECTS), university-level electives (12 ECTS) and optional courses (12 ECTS).
The publication of at least three articles in international pre-reviewed journals is a prerequisite to defending a doctoral thesis on the basis of a series of publications equipped with a summarizing article. The doctoral thesis is defended via a public dispute in front of the Joint Council for the Curriculum of Neurosciences.
