Doctoral Programme of Medicine and Sport

Starting from the 2022/2023 academic year there will only be one programme at the Faculty of Medicine. It will include four specialities:

  • Medicine;
  • Pharmacy;
  • Exercise and Sports Sciences;
  • Neurosciences.

Applicants for doctoral studies must hold a master's degree or equivalent qualification. Doctoral studies prepare students for employment as teaching or research staff at universities and other research institutions, or as leading specialists outside the academic sphere. Doctoral studies are research-based studies at the topmost level of higher education, during which the doctoral student acquires the necessary skills for independent research and development work. Some courses are delivered in Estonian. Learning of Estonian language during the studies is compulsory.

 

The programme consists of two modules: 
  • Research and Development module (5460 hours, equivalent to 210 ECTS credits); 
  • Study module (780 hours, equivalent to 30 ECTS credits). 

In order to gain international study and work experience, it is recommended that the doctoral student spends time studying and/or carrying out research in a foreign university or research institution. 

On successful completion of the programme, the doctoral student: 

1. will have a broad-based knowledge and systemic overview of their field and a deep knowledge of their narrower field of research; 

2. will have a good understanding of their speciality’s research methods, and be able to combine and develop them; will be able to apply, re-evaluate and expand on them; will understand and generalise the content and scope of interdisciplinary knowledge and research methods; 

3. will be able to analyse, synthesise and evaluate knowledge-intensive and novel ideas, identify and formulate research questions, and develop theories; 

4. will present their views and research results in specialist scientific communications in a reasoned and scientific manner (publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, conferences, seminars, etc); will be clear, logical, and understandable to the target audience in both their oral and written communication; 

5. will independently pose research questions and hypotheses, plan and conduct research work to answer research questions or to assess the validity of hypotheses; 

6. will be ethical in their conduct, and follow good research practice and other best practice guidelines put forth by the university, good data management practice, and intellectual property and data protection policies; 

7. will be able to systematically analyse their own skills and needs for self-improvement, and will develop speciality-specific general competencies, in both an educational and scientific context, as well as at a broader societal level; 

8. will pass on their knowledge via teaching, academic supervision or other means; 

9. will be able to manage processes and people, and carry out teamwork.

 

Research and Development module

The aim of the module is to enhance and strengthen both specialised and non-specialised knowledge and skills. The doctoral student will become competent in conducting research and will acquire transferable skills through practical experience, participation in events and other activities. 

The volume of this module is 5460 hours (corresponding to 210 ECTS).

On successful completion of the module, the doctoral student: 

1. will be able to combine, formulate and develop ideas specific to their speciality, and identify and formulate research questions; 

2. will combine and develop various methods of scientific analysis, and pose hypotheses; 

3. will be able to present and explain their research and results both orally and in writing to both a specialist and non-specialist audience, being able to do so in at least one foreign language in addition to their language of instruction; 

4. will observe good practices and regulations, including good research practice and other best practices put forth by the university, as well as intellectual property and data protection policies; 

5. will initiate, plan, apply and review research and development activities, and provide substantiated feedback about them; 

6. will pass on their knowledge through teaching, academic supervision or other means; 

7. will be able to operate independently in a complex, international work and study environment, including when carrying out research which requires management and teamwork skills, innovative thinking, and the ability to make strategic decisions. 

The doctoral student shall: 

1. write a doctoral thesis that complies with the requirements set in the Regulations for Doctoral Studies, and comply with the progress review regulations set at their faculty; 

2. give an oral presentation at at least one specialist conference (preferably international), and participate in international discussions regarding their research work; 

3. actively participate in the doctoral seminars for their chosen speciality throughout the duration of their studies; 

4. actively participate in research and development work at their faculty or institute, including contributing to the organisation of activities and participating in events organised by the Centre for Doctoral Studies; 

5. pass on their knowledge by teaching, supervising students (bachelor’s and master’s theses) or school students, or by promoting their speciality; 

6. analyse their progress and professional development in collaboration with their supervisor, and report on the progress of their research and other activities at the designated progress review appraisal.

 

Study module

The aim of the module is to enhance and strengthen both specialised and non-specialised knowledge and skills. The doctoral student will become competent in conducting research and will acquire transferable skills through practical experience, participation in events and other activities. 

The volume of this module is 780 hours (corresponding to 30 ECTS). The module is divided into two: a general part of the programme (Transferable Skills sub-module, 15 ECTS credits) and a specialised study part (Specialist Knowledge sub-module, 15 ECTS credits). 

On successful completion of the module, the doctoral student: 

1. will possess and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of their speciality and research field, and be able to critically evaluate and generalise ideas specific to their speciality; 

2. will be able to present, both orally and in writing, problems related to their speciality and research work, their conclusions and the theories underlying them, to a specialist audience as well as when communicating with non-specialists; they will be able to debate and participate in relevant discussions in both the language of instruction and the foreign language most important to their speciality, including publishing original research results in international peer-reviewed publications; 

3. will have a good grasp of and be able to critically evaluate their research field’s methods of scientific analysis; 

4. will understand and analyse their speciality’s interdisciplinary connections with other disciplines, and use opportunities for interdisciplinary research in their own research work; 

5. will understand and be able to analyse choices related to research ethics, intellectual property, data protection and data maintenance; 

6. will possess in-depth knowledge about teaching, management, academic supervision and the popularisation of their speciality, and be able to pass on such knowledge competently; 

7. will be able to analyse and interrelate different methods of teamwork and management (both on an organisational and personal level). 

The doctoral student shall: 

1. pass the course ARTH.02.063 “Bioethics”; 

2. pass the course ARTH.03.021 “Biostatistics I”;  

3. pass the compulsory and elective courses for their chosen speciality; 

4. acquire the specialised and general competencies and attitudes set out in the learning outcomes of the programme and module, both by way of self-analysis and by following the individual plan composed in collaboration with their supervisor(s).
