Andres Salumets, Professor of Reproductive Medicine at the University of Tartu, has been appointed Professor of Reproductive Medicine at Karolinska Institute. He is probably the first Estonian professor at Karolinska Institute.
Karolinska Institute is one of the largest and most prestigious medical universities in Europe. Salumets starts work at its Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC).
Aiming to bring the newest opportunities in fertility treatment to Estonian and Finnish patients, professor Salumets has also started cooperation with the clinics of the Nova Vita and Ovumia group in Estonia and Finland. “The everyday work of fertility clinics is complicated and requires that scientific achievements are rapidly implemented to ensure the quality and efficiency of therapy,” explained Pekka Sillanaukee, the Chairman of Board of Nova Vita and Ovumia, commenting on the appointment of Salumets.
Salumets said that for him, the new beginning of cooperation with the Nova Vita Clinic was emotionally very positive, as he worked at the clinic as embryologist 25 years ago and was involved with the birth of the first baby at Nova Vita. “In the past years, I have mostly dealt with developing technologies to increase the efficiency of fertility therapy. This is why cooperation with Nova Vita Clinic gives me an important opportunity to take part in clinical work, which, thanks to direct communication with patients, always offers positive emotions,” said Salumets.
Salumets has been active in fertility therapy for more than twenty years. Over the past decade, he has focused on developing the technologies of fertility therapy. Currently, Andres Salumets is also the board member of the laboratory medicine company Tervisetehnoloogiate Arenduskeskus. Andres Salumets is also visiting professor at the University of Helsinki and President of Baltic Fertility Society.
